THE QUIZ
On the 10th
of April the U11 and U13 quiz teams travelled to the RDS in Dublin. We were in
the National Final of the Credit Union Schools Quiz. On the U11 team were
Alanna, Luke, Killian and Daniel and on the U13 team were Sabina, Ralf, Isobel and
Orla. Callum and Eoin were the subs.
We met up
outside Athenry Credit Union at 8am to wait for the bus. There were loads of
people on the bus, friends, family and teachers. On the way to Dublin, Ms.
Treacy kindly prepared us by researching and asking us questions. When we were
approaching Dublin, Geraldine from the Credit Union generously supplied us with
10 euros to buy a meal and a drink when we arrived at the RDS. After that, she
gave us a menu so we could choose what to eat at the Glenroyal hotel which we
were going to be eating in on the way home from the quiz.
We arrived at the RDS at about 10:15. We registered and had
something to eat. We had weird tasting hot chocolate that burns your mouth.
After that we went out to the main hall but Daniel got his hat stuck on a
pillar. At 12:00 we got our photos taken with Marty Whelan. Then we noticed
that someone had got Daniel’s hat down with a pole. It was another hour and a
half before the quiz started so we ate some Polo mints. The vice president of
the Irish League of Credit Unions made a speech and the quiz began. Marty
Whelan was the quizmaster. There were 10 rounds for the U-11s and 12 rounds for
the U-13s with 6 questions in each round. We finished in 5th with 38
points and only 3 points off the winners, who had 41 points. The U-13s also
finished in 5th with 47 points from 12 rounds and only 4 points off
the winners who had 51 points.
The
quiz ended at half four. They gave us a bag with a portable speaker, step counter
and a cert for getting to the national final. After that we went down to our
parents and they congratulated us on 5th place. Subsequently we went
to the bus. Killian sat beside Daniel and Luke, and Alanna sat next to Callum.
While we were on the bus we talked about the quiz and listened to music. Then
we arrived at the Glenroyal Hotel for our dinner. There was a choice of curry,
chips, steak or salmon. While we were eating Callum, filled a chip with salt,
pepper and vinegar and gave it to Rachel. There was chocolate, vanilla and
strawberry ice-cream for dessert, but we mixed it all together and crushed in
some meringue from the adult’s ice-cream. It turned a weird pink colour and we
called it yozoup. We had a great day and really
enjoyed ourselves but we couldn’t have got to the national final without the
help of Mrs Treacy, Mr. O’Connor and the Credit Union.
